Special announcement from our Medical Director Martha Edwards
Dr. Martha Edwards Staff Veterinarian, Medical Director
Dr. Martha has a lifelong love for animals. After graduating from high school, she went on to study to be a veterinary technician. After receiving an Associate of Arts Degree in Animal Science and spending a year as a veterinary technician, Dr. Martha went back to school to earn her doctorate and graduated in 1989 from Kansas State University.
Since graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Martha has practiced medicine in South Florida and the Caribbean and has lived full-time in the Keys since 1991. She joined a practice in Islamorada in 1994 and managed the practice shortly after it was sold to VCA in 2000. In 2010 Dr. Martha opened her own practice, the Island Hammock Pet Hospital in Key Largo, where she continues to pursue her passion to keep animals healthy and happy. Dr. Martha also donates her time to help our local animal shelters and rescue groups.
When she is not working, Dr. Martha is an avid SCUBA diver, kayaker and is fascinated with the ecology and marine biology of the Florida Keys. She currently has two domestic shorthair cats; Tootsie (aka the Tootsinator), and Chloe, whom she adopted from a local rescue organization. She lives with her husband, John, in Islamorada.
Dr. Marta Pawluk Staff Veterinarian
Dr. Marta Pawluk was born and raised in Poland. Upon graduating from high school, she left her home country to study in the United States. She completed her undergraduate studies in Philadelphia, graduating Cum Laude from Temple University. From there, she headed off to veterinary school in Grenada, West Indies where she graduated Summa Cum Laude from St. Georges University. After several years of island living in Grenada, she headed back to the US to complete her clinical year at Cornell University followed by an externship at the University of Pennsylvania.
While attending veterinary school, Dr. Marta particularly enjoyed emergency medicine cases. Owning and fostering shelter animals all her life, she has also been a proponent of rescued animals and volunteered at several spay/neuter clinics while studying veterinary medicine. Dr. Pawluk also donates her time to help our local animal shelters and rescue groups.
Away from work, Dr. Marta enjoys spending time outdoors. Her hobbies include hiking, running, and playing tennis. Now living in the Keys, she is thrilled to be back near the water where she likes to SCUBA dive, kayak and paddleboard. Dr. Marta resides in Key Largo with Meitschi, an island dog that she adopted while in Grenada.
Dr. Jana Fly Staff Veterinarian
Dr. Fly is originally from Texas and graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989. For the next 16 years, she practiced small animal and equine medicine as well as being a working shareholder at Nashville Pet Emergency. In 2005, Dr. Fly moved to the Florida Keys and started her relief veterinary service. She has worked relief for numerous general practice and emergency clinics from Key West to St. Augustine as well as the west coast of Florida. In addition, she was an active volunteer with the Marine Mammal Conservancy from 2005 to 2010 and has served on the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council.
Dr. Fly and her best friend, Scamp, a Jack Russell Terrier, enjoy fishing the backcountry on her skiff and taking long walks around her Tavernier neighborhood.
Chelsy Machado Hospital Manager
Chelsy is originally from Miami and moved to the Florida Keys in 2013.
Chelsy intially joined us as a Client Services Representative, was promoted to Front Office Service Manager and again promoted to Hospital Manager in 2017.
Her love for animals and happy clients always keeps a smile on her face. Chelsy has four dogs, Smokey, Bruno, Isla, and April each with their own unique personalities. She lives in Key Largo and enjoys painting, boating and fishing with her husband Danny, kayaking, taking her pups out for a swim in the beautiful waters off Key Largo and enjoying the positive island vibes.
Megan Pfaff Lead Nurse Technician
Megan is a graduate of Coral Shores High School on Plantation Key. She left the Keys to attend Santa Fe College in Gainesville, where she earned an Associate of Arts degree.
Megan is an active member of MarrVelous Pet Rescues and continues to be a foster parent to needy animals looking for homes. Megan lives in Key Largo and shares her life with her Dachshund named Odie and domestic shorthair, Sake. When she is not working at our hospital, she likes to SCUBA dive, kayak, snorkel, and fish.
Tiffany Bonilla Arce Nurse Technician
Tiffany was born and raised in Brooklyn NY. As a child, her dream was to work with animals. After joining a practice as a kennel technician in 2003, Tiffany made it her mission to learn all that she could and become a great veterinary technician. After accomplishing that goal while working as an assistant at that practice in Brooklyn for nine years, she relocated to Florida to be with her extended family and utilize her skills here at the Island Hammock Pet Hospital.
Tiffany lives with her husband, Ruben, her sons, Alexander, Aiden, and their newest addition Avery, her dogs, Avis, Chase and MooMoo, and her Scottish Fold Senor Poofy Pants. When she's not running around after her kids, she enjoys watching movies, singing, drawing, being an amateur photographer and helping her husband DJ.
Kevin Martin Nurse Technician
Kevin moved to the Florida Keys in 2010, after graduating from Felix Varela Senior High School in Miami with a veterinary assistant certification (CVA). He has always been fascinated with animals, and it is this fascination that has led him to pursue a career in the veterinary field.
Kevin’s hobbies are hunting, fishing, boating, and working out. He lives in Key Largo with his giant dog, Blanca. They go for a run every morning, taking in the beautiful sights the Keys have to offer.
Katy Solis Nurse Technician
Raised in Miami, Katy has always had a passion for animals of all sorts. After graduating high school, Katy lived and worked in the Everglades National Park for a few years and was able to immerse herself in the unique wildlife that Florida has to offer. After a brief stint on the NC beach coast, she returned to South Florida with her Veterinary Assistant Certification from Coastal Carolina Community College. Settling in Key Largo, we were delighted to have her join the staff at IHPH. Katy looks forward everyday to working around animals and continuing her education.
Katy loves to take her dogs, Teddi and Penny, everywhere, especially out on the water. Also, she loves to spend time with her two cats, Bellatrix and Misty Day, her Hedgehog, Hegie, and Western Hog Nose, Antigone. When she's not working or caring for her pets, Katy visits her family often and loves to go out with friends camping, go to the beach, and do almost anything outdoors.
Eva Batres Nurse Technician
Eva is originally from Miami but grew up in Homestead where she graduated from South Dade Sr. High as one of the top in her class. She started working in the veterinary industry as a kennel technician in 2016. Since then she has grown in the vet field and has ambitions to become a veterinarian. Her love for animals began at a very young age when she would go visit her grandfather's farm and helped her grandmother feed the rabbits. Eva has an adorable Pitbull named Bruce.
In her spare time, she likes to read, go to baseball games, do genealogy, go kayaking, fishing, and travel. Eva is also a huge Disney fan and tends to visit the parks more than the average person. If she's ever out of town you will most likely find her hanging out at the Magic Kingdom with Mickey and the rest of the Disney characters.
Michelle Koon Front Office Service Manager
Michelle has been working in the veterinary industry since 2005. She started as a kennel technician and as her passion for caring for animals grew, so did her career. She has had many roles in the industry, each providing her with more knowledge and stronger relationships with clients and co-workers alike.
Karla Buckley Client Services Representative
Born in Minnesota, Karla moved to Colorado as a teenager. While studying nursing, she met her husband, John, the light of her life. They raised two wonderful boys, Adrian and Christopher. After working for her family business for 25 years, they decided to move to the Keys so John could pursue his SCUBA diving career.
When she's not working, she spends time outdoors, kayaking, SCUBA diving, and swimming. She has two cats, Penny, who she adopted as a feral from Pennekamp Park, and Lena, who runs the household. Karla loves to play cards, board games, and do just about anything with friends and family.
Karla has spent many years fostering for assistant dog programs, Colorado Greyhound Adoption and any other animal that found her front door. She has always had a house full of animals and really enjoys working with all the furry friends at the Island Hammock Pet Hospital.
Danielle Albury Client Services Representative
Danielle is a native to the Keys. Her and her family are true conchs from Tavernier. Dani previously worked at a dental office for many years but has always dreamed of being part of a veterinary team. She has a dog named Snickers and a rabbit named Valentino.
Dani is proficent in working with animals and enjoys it. She started pet sitting in high school. She is devoted to making the patients feel comfortable and relaxed in our office. Also offers to assist clients in any way possible. Dani spends her free time with family and friends, loves listening to music and being by the ocean.
Kelly Anne MacCombie Kennel Technician
Kelly Anne is a born and raised conch who resides in Islamorada. After graduating from Coral Shores, she attended university at Florida State where she earned her bachelor's degree in biological science and minor in chemical science. She spent the last couple years in Wildlife Conservation where she worked with game birds, mice and rats, venomous snakes, pythons, and even crocodiles. She now spends her days off volunteering at Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge as a Detection Dog Handler.
Kelly Anne has always had a passion for animals big and small and finds great satisfaction in working with all of them. She has a mini zoo at home with her dog Zelda, cat Shinks, turtle Squirttle, leopard gecko Leonard, and three freshwater fish tanks with her fish friends and Mr. Frog. When she’s not working or volunteering she loves to swim, hike, paint, and capture the beauty of nature in her photography.
Alyssa Courant Kennel Technician
Alyssa is from Long Island, NY and also lived on an island off the coast of Maine where she cared for horses. She moved to the FL Keys in 2015 to get her degree in marine environmental technology with a focus in marine mammal behavior, care and training from the college of the Florida Keys.
Alyssa splits her time between caring for cats and dogs boarding at IHPH and caring for dolphins as a marine mammal behaviorist/trainer here in Key Largo. When she is not working with her canine and beloved dolphin friends, she enjoys SCUBA diving, painting, or just enjoying island life with her husband and their animals: her lab/best friend Willy, special needs dog Deaf-Jeff, Charlie cat, and Guacamole and Enchilada the guinea pigs!
